Music Education, BM

The Music Education major will prepare students for careers working in K-12 settings teaching general, choral, and instrumental music. Candidates for the Music Education major will complete the state-approved subject-matter competency requirement from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) through required music coursework. As a state-approved teacher preparation program, the requirements for the Music Subject Matter (MSM) Program are subject to revision at any time by state or federal law. Music Education majors will be eligible to obtain a California teaching credential, by completing the music education professional methods courses (MUS 282, MUS 405, MUS 344/345, MUS 476/479, MUS 473, MUS 475) with fieldwork and student teaching.

Students choosing the Music Education major must additionally be admitted into the Credential program for Single Subject Credential. Students who do not meet the credential requirements may not be able to complete the major due to accreditation requirements.

Candidates must complete all credential and state requirements to be eligible for a credential. Credential requirements can be obtained from the School of Music’s Music Education advisors and the School of Education’s credential program advisors.

Traditional Degree Program Requirements (102-104 units)


General Education Requirements (40-55 units)

The General Education requirements will follow the curriculum set forth for other University degree programs. Twelve (12) units of G.E. requirements will be met through the specific coursework of the Music Education major. See School of Performing Arts Handbook for details.

Core Applied Music Requirements

*Enrollment in Class Piano (MUS 012  or 022 ) is required of music majors whose primary instrument is other than piano each semester until the Piano Proficiency requirements are met. An opportunity to attempt to pass the Piano Proficiency exam for first-semester students will be offered during rehearsal camp. For returning students, an attempt to pass the exam or portions of the exam will be offered at the end of each semester. **Students must complete eight (8) units of Private Instruction on the same instrument or voice.

1Enrollment for one unit of MUS 080 -089 , 460 -469  Private Instruction is required for each semester of residence for all music majors. A minimum of eight (8) units is required. Students must satisfy the Applied Music Proficiency requirements to enroll in upper-division applied study. They will typically complete this proficiency jury at the end of the fourth semester of applied study. Students will remain in the lower-division applied study until they successfully complete the proficiency jury.

2Enrollment is required in at least one Major Ensemble (MUS 067 , 068 , 091 , 092 , 094 , 097 , 099 , 490A 490B 490C 490D 490E 490F 490H ) for full credit during each semester of enrollment at California Baptist University. A minimum of eight (8) units is required. Additional ensembles may be taken for 0-1 units.
