Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Post-Masters Certificate

The Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse who focuses clinical practice on individuals, families, or populations across the life span at risk for developing and/or having a diagnosis of psychiatric disorders or mental health problems. Graduates are prepared to work respectfully and collaboratively with clients/consumers who are experiencing severe or chronic mental illnesses to determine biopsychosocial healthcare needs within a complex and changing environment. Theory and clinical coursework focus on assessment; differential diagnosis and disease management; intervention planning; individual, family, and group psychotherapy; health promotion; and disease prevention.

Additional Admission Requirements


Admission standards for graduate studies at California Baptist University can be found in the admissions section of the university catalog.  In addition, each candidate must meet the following requirements for this program:

  • Additional Grade Point Average
    • A minimum 3.0 GPA for admission
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and/or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or the evaluated equivalency.
  • An active, unencumbered California Registered Nursing (RN) License
  • Professional resume with a Minimum of one (1) year of work experience as an RN is required for APRN concentrations (Nurse Practitioner)
  • Complete a successful interview with the College of Nursing.
  • Prerequisites must be completed within the last five years (completed with a “B-” or better):
    • NUR 555 Advanced Pathophysiology 
    • NUR 558 Advanced Pharmacology*
    • NUR 560 Advanced Assessment
  • Required clearances (upon admission):
    • CPR Certification
    • Background Check Clearance
    • Health Clearance
    • Drug Testing
    • Proof of Health Insurance
    • Proof of Motor Vehicle Insurance
  • Students are expected to work as a registered nurse during the program to gain clinical experience.

*The Advanced Pharmacology course must be completed within the last 5 years of the date of application for the Nurse Practitioner Furnishing Number (unless the applicant has an active California Furnishing number).
