Instrumental Performance, BM

The Bachelor of Music in Instrumental Performance prepares students with the fundamental musical skills, technical competencies, stylistic understanding, and artistic cultivation to successfully pursue a career in instrumental performance. Highlights of the program include strong theoretical and musicianship training, thorough studies in music history and instrumental literature, pedagogical coaching, collaborative training in a variety of musical styles, and rigorous performance instruction, including private study with CBU faculty and consistent engagement with professional performers through residencies and masterclasses. Students in the program will also be required to actively perform throughout their tenure. These performances include numerous individual solo performances, two capstone recital presentations, and collaborative performances in a variety of styles including orchestral and wind band works, early to contemporary chamber music, operatic and choral repertory, and modern church music. 

Traditional Major Program Requirements (84-86 units)


General Education Requirements (40-55 units)

The General Education requirements will follow the curriculum set forth for other University degree programs. Twelve (12) units of G.E. requirements will be met through the specific coursework of the Instrumental Performance major. See School of Music Handbook for details.

Core Applied Music Requirements


Note


*Enrollment in Class Piano (MUS 012  or 022 ) is required of music majors whose primary instrument is other than piano each semester until the Piano Proficiency requirements are met. An opportunity to attempt to pass the Piano Proficiency exam for first semester students will be offered during rehearsal camp. For returning students, an attempt to pass the exam or portions of the exam will be offered at the end of each semester. See Music Handbook for Piano Proficiency requirements.

**Students must complete eight (8) units of Private Instruction on the same instrument or voice.   ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

1Enrollment for one unit of MUS 080 -089 , 460 -469  Private Instruction is required for each semester of residence for all music majors. A minimum of eight (8) units is required.

2Enrollment is required in at least one Major Ensemble (MUS 067 , 068 , 091 , 092 , 094 , 097 , 099 , 490A 490B 490C 490D 490E 490F 490H ) for full credit during each semester of enrollment at California Baptist University. A minimum of eight (8) units is required. Additional ensembles may be taken for 0-1 units.

Private Instruction Requirements


*Students must complete eight (8) units of private instruction in the same instrumental area from the following list of courses.  These eight (8) units are in addition to those in the Core Applied Music Requirements.

Students must complete twelve (12) units of additional upper division music electives

OR

Complete one of the concentrations: Jazz Studies; Keyboard Collaborative Arts; Live Music Production (MD); Songwriting; Studio Production; Worship Arts; Worship Tech
