Preliminary Single Subject Credential

Students seeking a Single Subject Credential are required to major in the content area they plan to teach and may also declare Preliminary Single Subject Credential as their second major. Single Subject Candidates may satisfy Subject Matter Competence.
Students interested in teaching middle or high school should complete the requirements for the Preliminary Single Subject Credential. Students must demonstrate subject matter competence to complete a credential either by completing an approved subject matter program, completing approved coursework, or by passing the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET). Check with a School of Education advisor to find out if your major has an approved subject matter program.
Candidates must complete all credential and state requirements to be eligible for a credential. Credential requirements can be obtained from the School of Education credential program advisors.

Admission Requirements
Integrated Credential Program Admission Requirements
A student who is admitted to the University is not automatically admitted to the Integrated Credential Program and must meet the following requirements:
- Demonstrate basic skills competency
- Take the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST); OR
- Demonstrate competence through an alternate route
- Demonstrate subject matter competency
- Enrolled in an approved subject matter competency program; OR
- Take the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) for the appropriate credential area
- Meet U.S. Constitution requirement
- Grade Point Average (GPA)
- Minimum GPA of 2.75 for acceptance
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 for all methods courses while in the program
- Verification of Certificate of Clearance
- One Recommendation, completed on forms provided, from professional source who can address your potential for success. Family members and friends may not complete recommendation.
