  • HMS 340 - Case Management and Assessment in Human Services


    Units: 3
    When Offered: OPS
    This course will emphasize community organizational theory and practice in human services, and community needs and assessment. In addition, students will be asked to develop change strategies and planning techniques to address deficits. Focuses on case management as a method of human service delivery. Students will develop skills in managing multiple aspects of human service interventions in dual roles of coordinator and provider of direct services. Case presentations, skill development assignments, and community projects are required.

  • HMS 415 - Family Violence and Mandated Reporting


    Units: 3

    An introduction to and overview of the phenomena of child abuse, as it relates to the helping professional. This class will examine the definition and cause of child abuse from sociological, cultural and psychological perspectives. The legal and child welfare systems will be studied in addition to treatment and prevention aspects of the child abuse issue.

  • HMS 420 - Crisis Intervention

    Introduction to the theory and practice of crisis intervention including triage assessment, skill-building, cultural implications, and practical applications. Approaches that assist individuals, groups, organizations and communities to manage crises will be explored and practiced. Understanding of the short-term nature of crisis intervention, and how counselors work with first responders and others will be explored.

  • HMS 495 - Human Services Capstone Project

    The course is an in-depth, student-centered experience that requires the integration of theory and practical experience. Students will apply the skills and techniques they have learned as well as their knowledge of agencies and culturally diverse client populations to a specific project. The project will identify an issue, problem, information gap or creative endeavor in which the student will explore, research, evaluate and theorize in a final paper. On successful completion of the course, students will have met the learning outcomes of the Human Services degree program.

    A course involving students in an in-depth study of procedures of copy editing for newspapers, magazines and online media.     A single, primary, in-depth project, involving a social issue with the intent to educate, inform, and implement change, will be at the heart of the class. Weekly visual and written goals will provide consistent retooling along the way. The collection of images and other related content in the field, as well as research, message construction, writing and editing, will play vital roles. Real world investigation will be vital in this advanced journalistic endeavor. Students will show and discuss their work weekly, hare progress and respond to questions and fine tune the direction of their projects together. The style, length, direction, point of view, and primary message will grow out of decisions made in these small groups. Depending on the decisions of the small groups, the project may become a collaborative effort. The final project will be both visual and written.
